(2023) Ongoing Other Work Team_Laura Walker, Mike Styczynski A Country Vibe in the City is a sustainable, accessible, and affordable community within a community. This Detroit neighborhood was once densely populated with single-family homes, but due to disinvestment and racial discrimination, it has been demolished into a rural area with a few boarded up homes, dumping grounds, reclaimed lots for local farmers, and a few legacy Detroiters that have remained in solidarity with one another. As such, this project contributes to existing neighbors remaining in their homes, rather than being displaced by rising rent costs. The design focuses on increasing agency, accessibility, and ownership where people share in building their community through stewardship. In addition to fixed-income rental homes, shared resources designed throughout: a tool library, community agriculture in partnership with the existing urban farmers in the area, and everyday needs such as laundry, cooking, and childcare will be co-located in communal spaces. The first phase is the rehabilitation of an existing single-family home into a YouthBuild Learning Center, where youth with disabilities learn entrepreneurial skills around real estate and construction. This notion of self-sufficiency and creative and economic development extends into every aspect of how this project is conceived. Many of the residents will live on fixed incomes; hence, sustainable infrastructure reduces their living expenses, while a portion of the sell-back profits go towards the existing neighbors. The individual home design and shared recreational spaces focuses on intergenerational relationships, aging-in-place, and the needs of dis/abled folks and their caregivers.&nbsp; The site itself is politically and environmentally contentious. Located next to a major automotive plant, the residents have high levels of asthma and other health impacts from air pollution. Additionally, due to the lack of investment in stormwater infrastructure, this area experiences frequent and devastating flooding. Reclaimed billboard tarp is cut into strips, which are woven into colorful tapestries, and flip-tables serve as both table and display. Because of the tight space constraints, the space needed to be flexible enough to serve multiple functions. It is used as workshops, community gathering spaces, pop-ups, and gallery space. The brighter colors of tarp are near the exterior storefront, while the darker colors clad the area further back from the entry. The screens are moveable on curtain track. The Detroit Design 139 exhibit used this space as one of their satellite exhibits. The winning entry for the 2018 Design Center in a Box competition, hosted by the Detroit Planning and Development Department, Design Core Detroit, and funded by the Knight Foundation's Knight Cities Challenge. Shelter Bay transforms a defunct chain restaurant into a visually open animal hospital. The project makes visible the way our pets experience the world through color and perception. The gradient of color expresses the strongest color ranges that dogs and cats perceive. No bright colors are used, as they can create anxiety in pets. The existing skylights are exposed to bring in daylight, and wood material carves out human spaces in the center of the animal care zones. Finding people on the screen or in the building quickly is essential. The clinic’s growing network of places and people is translated into a spatial platform while choreographing the intricate function of movement required to care for our dogs and cats through form and #purrrposeful interventions. Our Design is inspired by the relationship between physical movement and the collective body within the cafe and fitness spaces. A system of layers and objects push and pull in response to activity, point of view, and events. Plants as a source of body sustenance, are celebrated through reimagined Talavera tiles with plant iconography forming tile patterns. The design balances several uses into a flexible space while highlighting and presenting artifacts and views from in and around the house. Eliza Howell Park is a place to reflect and discover the creative needs and potentials of individuals and communities. WHISPER and SHOUT amplify these qualities as a cathartic, sonic cleanse. Many public spaces suppress certain kinds of sound, particularly those deemed too emotional, too disruptive, too "other." This installation reclaims the right to vocalize fully, from rage to vulnerability, in a society that silences marginal expressions. This act reclaims power by shifting how space is occupied and shared. WHISPER relies on the intimacy to share intentions, desires, fears, and dreams. Organic cotton pillows tie dyed with natural dyes provide a soft, colorful place to sit. Folks write their whispers on upcycled pages from books sourced from John King Books. SHOUT is a pilgrimage through an individual, cathartic, release of what holds you back. The traveling, nomadic quality of SHOUT means it needs to be discovered and provide anonymity. It is a market theater of climate response and performance, organized around the sun and the seasons - Prepare; Respond; Recover; and Celebrate. Each day is a unique experience around these principles, with something new to taste, witness, smell, and move through. Artists, farmers, solar power engineers, educators, and designers alike have come together to exchange, perform, learn, and share. Come join us at our communal tables and immerse yourself in Detroit’s unique and innovative ecological movement, where the definition of beauty is an act of resistance; where native plants are transformed into art; where the sun above and the soil below are active agents that restore our relationship with the land.&nbsp; The Climate Clinic is designed to be easily transported through bike trailers. We designed a kit-of-parts that is meant to easily go up and take down. The central pole is held in place through tensioned ropes that are anchored to the ground, and canvas is connected to the ropes, providing shade and defining space. The canvas fins track the sun’s movement, creating a radial sundial of light and shadow. (6) 600 watt solar panels are fastened to the rope and charge a solar-powered generator. Throughout the space are modular tables, shaped in arcs to bring folks closer together. Scattered around the pavilion are grow bags with native plants and healing botanicals. Ms. Tammy Black is the President of Manistique Block Club and creator of the Manistique Community Treehouse Center – that works to help local youth and community gain mental and physical well-being. She has received numerous awards, grant funding, and state- and city-wide political support. Her advocacy for Detroiters and people with dis/abilities extends into her real estate development projects. She has installed solar power on the roofs of dozens of homes in Detroit, lowering energy bills and increasing resiliency. Detra Iverson of Love N Labor Botanicals – an organization spreading health and wellness through gardening – is a Black Indigenous farmer, botanist, and chef. She was awarded a fellowship at Michigan State University’s Center for Urban Agricultural Innovation in Detroit. She is passionate about restoring our relationship with nature for healing, wellness, and community. Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. The TED Countdown Summit 2023 takes place from July 11-14, 2023 in Detroit, Michigan. The bollard covers bring color, branding, and longevity to bollards, while simultaneously protecting spaces from driving accidents. We designed a supportive system of bollards that frame the boundary between workspace and communal spaces, while also housing artwork, digital screens, HVAC, and electrical conduits.&nbsp; The spaces are organized by a circulation spine that connects the large meeting room at the entry to the collaboration huddle at the end of the space. Team leaders are located near their team, and acoustic insulation reduces the transmission of sounds from the warehouse to the office space. A decorative ceiling made of the bollard covers is over the collaboration space and houses the lights. The engagement was conducted as part of a commissioned master planning process for the City of Detroit. The approach centered community members as experts, recognizing their lived experience as critical to shaping the park’s long-term future. Engagement activities were designed to build local agency and reflect Farwell Park’s role as an active neighborhood anchor with established patterns of use and care. The process combined public workshops, focus groups, one-on-one conversations, and an online survey, engaging residents, City staff, and elected officials across a range of ages and relationships to the park. Activities were intentionally accessible and flexible, supporting both structured feedback and informal exchange. The engagement process translated community knowledge into a clear organizational framework for the park, guiding the location of amenities, circulation, and programmed spaces. The resulting master plan establishes a phased strategy for investment that strengthens existing uses while supporting long-term adaptability. The master plan, designed in collaboration with JIMA Studio and Izzie Global, was published with the City of Detroit in June 2025.
